    Heng Hwa cuisine. Often overlooked for the famous ‘main’ Chinese cuisines, the core of Heng Hwa cuisine is about simplicity and purity, yet still deliciously flavourful and comforting.

    PUTIEN’s menu offers an enticing spread of dishes that range from comfortingly simple to tantalisingly unexpected. Indulge in the pure flavours of the Iced Abalone, where the dish is all about letting the core ingredients take centre stage. Even familiar, seemingly straightforward dishes such as the Deep-fried Chicken with Garlic were absolutely addictive, and the manner in which such humble dishes were executed was something that quickly won the Chope team over.

    PUTIEN, like the cuisine that it champions may have had humble roots when they first opened, but from the quality of the dishes we sampled, it’s easy to see why they’ve been such a resounding success. (Aug 2013)

    “PUTIEN offers Heng Hwa (a town located in China’s Fujian province) cuisine, instead of generic Chinese food. Two dishes you won’t find easily on standard Chinese food menus are the Pu Tien sweet and sour pork with lychees and fried “Hing Hwa” bee hoon that is garnished interestingly with 10 different ingredients including fresh clams, seaweed and peanuts.” –I-S Asia-City

    What We Love

    It says a lot when a restaurant is able to offer a long menu and still produce each and every one of them to such a high standard. If we could go on, we’d probably work our way through the menu in listing everything that we loved.

    You have to try the Drunken Cockles. Fresh, cold cockles are marinated and then topped with fresh chilli and garlic. The flavours are clean yet bold, and incredibly appetising. The Seaweed with Mini Shrimp is one of those ‘unexpected’ dishes. Don’t let its humble appearance full you, the seaweed may look simple, but delicate sweetness and mouth-watering umami flavour go along way to keeping your hunger primed and ready.

    Keen on more fascinating dishes? The PUTIEN style Century Egg is another dish we’d highly recommend. The coating disintegrates ever so delicately to reveal the tasty piece of Century Egg hidden within. This is a must-order for any century egg lovers. We were also very enamoured with the Deep Fried Duck with Yam. A crispy yam coating wrapped around succulent duck meat? It’s making us hungry just writing about it.

    And before we finish, we have to recommend the signature PUTIEN Lor Mee. Nothing like the Lor Mee you’re used to here, this involves “silky Putien noodles with pork belly, prawns, and clams, braised in a luxurious pork broth”. If that description didn’t catch your eye, then we’re not sure what will. We can definitely see why it’s considered a signature dish because we practically ate the bowl clean.

    If it wasn’t clear enough, we’re definitely big fans of the food on offer at PUTIEN, and if all Heng Hwa cuisine is as good as this, then we’re definitely converts. (Aug 2013)
