    Description

Tucked away in labyrinthine Chinatown is this family-style steamboat restaurant that serves up classic Chinese steamboat. But with its bright neon signboards and funky colourful interiors done up with pop-art illustrations of traditional Chinese motifs, you’d be forgiven for thinking these were hipster digs. Nothing pretentious here, just hearty, communal style hot-pot.

All the standard components of this beloved tradition are here: a free-flow of fresh ingredients like vegetables, scallops, clams, prawns, pork, and beef are selected off a buffet counter, rich broth bubbles away in a “crystal pot” that’s embedded in the table for safety and ease of cooking, and a condiments bar where you can mix up the dipping sauce of your dreams. It’s the special features that make this a cut above the rest: a “smokeless barbecue” pan, also embedded in the table, allows you to grill your ingredients without the unpleasant odour of smoke in your clothes and hair, and a selection of a la carte dishes to go with your steamboat provides some welcome variety.

Think Szechuan-style stir fries like shrimp and beef tossed in a piquant Szechuan-pepper sauce with crunchy greens, and a signature Boiled Chicken Coconut Soup, featuring pieces of chicken and Chinese herbs cooked in a whole coconut, juices and all. The best part? Ask the staff to cook up a rolled omelette on the barbecue pan and they’ll gladly oblige, turning out a lovely, fluffy omelette flavoured with the juices from the rest of your meal.

This is a steamboat with lots of value-added goodness, perfect for family dinners and other gatherings. (Nov 2016)
