One wonders, wandering around Joo Chiat, what Mr Chew Joo Chiat would make of what was once his coconut plantation. As Singapore’s first heritage town, the Joo Chiat of today still retains the laid back seaside vibe and old-world charm, but the sheer variety of international cuisines offered in the rows of eateries is mind-boggling. Would Mr Chew be flabbergasted by the staggering choice of food? Or would he crave for something closer to home?

If it's the latter, he might be pleased with the offerings of Baba Chews Bar and Eatery. Not only is it named after him, it also offers food that he was probably familiar with. On the menu are favourites such as Ayam Buah Keluak (a spicy chicken with black nut dish) and Pong Tauhu (traditional Peranakan soup with homemade prawn stock, pork meatballs, and bamboo shoots). Western interpretations inspired by well-loved Peranakan dishes are also on the menu in the form of the Ayam Buah Keluak Burger, Foie Gras Tau Kwa Pau, and Iberico Short Ribs Pongteh (pork with fermented soya bean). In the wide-ranging menu, non-Peranakan dishes such as Baba Chews Club Sandwich (local toast with Cajun chicken breast, Bombay onion omelette, and grilled streaky bacon) and Chilli Crab Cake are also available. And as Mr Chew winds down his meal, he might even order an innovative cocktail named after him from the bar: Chews Laksa. A tribute to the food culture in Katong, the cocktail comprises Bacardi White, Malibu, pineapple juice, coconut cream, gula melaka syrup and laksa-infused whipped cream. We dare say Baba Chew himself would have a fabulous time here. (Aug 2016)
