    ABOUT

Coolies Club celebrates Phuket's rich mining heritage and vibrant nightlife of Soi Romanee. Designed by Bill Bensley, the venue combines traditional Chinese and Sino-Portuguese architecture, creating a festive atmosphere that echoes the indulgence of the past. Situated in a sophisticated shophouse, Coolies Club offers a unique culinary experience, focusing on smoked, fire-cooked dishes with bold flavours. The opium-den-styled dining rooms provide an exclusive ambience, pairing a progressive six-course menu with fine wines and sake, inviting guests into a world of historical luxury and culinary excellence.

    THE STORY
From the 16th to the 20th century, Phuket emerged as a leading tin-producing locale, drawing a vast workforce from China. These labourers, known as coolies, played a pivotal role in the mining operations that fuelled the local economy and shaped the cultural tapestry of the region. Soi Romanee, once synonymous with pleasure and leisure, was the epicentre where miners sought respite from their gruelling work. The street was famously lined with high-end brothels and opium dens, providing various forms of entertainment to the miners. The name "Romanee," meaning pleasure in Thai, aptly reflects the street's history as a hub of indulgence. It also pays homage to a famous Romanian mamasan who was a central figure in the nightlife scene, further adding to the locale's exotic allure.
During this period, Phuket's social and cultural landscape was vibrant yet complex, woven with the threads of hard labour, migration, and the transient joys of Soi Romanee's nightlife. These historical nuances are what Coolies Club aims to honour and revive. Our venue not only pays tribute to the tin miners and their way of life but also celebrates the rich cultural amalgamation that occurred due to this significant economic activity.
Today, Coolies Club strives to keep this history alive by offering a dining and social experience that mirrors the spirited legacy of its location. Each element of Coolies Club, from its décor to its culinary offerings, is infused with references to its storied past, ensuring that the spirit of Soi Romanee lives on in every experience we offer to our guests.
