    Returned to Merah Putih on my first trip back to Bali in 6 years to celebrate a milestone birthday. The evening started nicely, but pacing quickly became the issue. There were long gaps between courses, including one stretch over 20 minutes. I did the wine pairing and had to ask for refills more than once while we waited, and the wine was getting warm. After I asked the manager to speed things up, two of the heaviest courses (duck and steak) arrived within about 5 minutes of each other. It was too rich too fast and I couldn’t finish either. The delays also made me over an hour late to my post-dinner plans. They kindly comped our starter cocktails, but still charged for the extra wine we ordered while waiting which seemed unfair. The manager cited two large parties seated at the same time as the reason, which we noticed. Busy nights happen, but if the kitchen can’t handle it, it shouldn’t come at the expense of tasting-menu guests paying a premium. Disappointing for a birthday dinner.
