Pictures of the Italian countryside on the wall, the smells of comforting home-cooking wafting in the air, and charming old-world décor: this is like an Italian trattoria was lifted from a quiet neighbourhood in Italy and transplanted onto hectic Soi Asoke. Helmed by Italian chef Diego Pignatelli, Sfizio is a well-loved eatery that is a deli in the day, feeding hungry corporate lunch-seekers, and a more leisurely dinner-spot once the sun goes down.
The food is comforting, rustic Italian made by a capable hand. Rather than a mix of the usual “greatest hits” of Italian cuisine, the comprehensive menu lets you choose from a wide range of ways to eat your favourite ingredients. An entire section of the menu is dedicated to burrata, the king of soft cheeses, paired with various accompaniments from Parma ham to marinated sardines, or, as if this stretchy wonder could get more delicious, served deep-fried in pizza dough. Likewise, there isn’t just one gnocchi dish on the menu; have these pillowy nuggets, which come in flavours ranging from beetroot to basil & parsley, served in a whole host of delicious creamy sauces (tip: the Tartufo, a simple mix of Italian cheese and a kiss of black truffle, is both classic and divine). Fresh pastas, too, come in a range of robust sauces, like orecchiette in a toss-up of turnips, anchovies, and olive oil, or eggy fettuccine, studded with artichokes and sausages in a white-wine sauce. A hard-to-find, super-authentic Roman-style carbonara, made with salty guanciale (cured pork jowl, not watery bacon), pecorino, and lots of black pepper, is a menu highlight. Delicious Italian plates drawn from the rustic heart of Italy, with an equally rustic, welcoming atmosphere: step off the busy streets of Soi Asoke and into this loving dream of a trattoria. THE BUZZ
“This is a restaurant that makes you wish it was in your neighborhood: friendly, well priced and, for the most part, totally unpretentious. Judging from the clientele, the local Italian crowd think so, too.” -BK Magazine
