The Khanitha in question is Khanitha Akaranitikul, a Thai silk fashion designer who in 1993 opened a restaurant that married traditional Thai cuisine with a amazing ambience, service, and decor. The result is one of the city’s most respected franchises. Baan Khanitha Sathorn is the second “home” of the franchise, filled with lovely antique handicrafts, paintings, and plants to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, a home away from home.
The food here is high-quality Thai plates that have the flavour and integrity of home cooking but the finesse and flair of a world-class kitchen. The Phad Thai Khung Lai Sua here is legendary, the humble phad thai elevated to an indulgent plate crowned with fleshy whole tiger prawns, bursting with bright spicy flavours. These prawns take on another form in the Khung Lai Sua Phad Song Kruang, taking pride of place on the plate, tossed up with cashews, ginko, aromatic jujubes, roasted chili, and crispy Thai basil leaves. The jewel of the menu is the Ruam Mit Talayphao, a massive platter of assorted grilled seafood, featuring sea shrimp, rock lobsters, squid, and tiger prawns. For more delicate seafood, the Pla Hima Nueng Manao is tender snow-fish gently steamed in a sauce of garlic, lime, and chili.
It’s not all seafood. The Chicken Massaman here is formidable: spicy, sweet, and rich, tender pieces of chicken fall off the bone, bathed in a delicious gravy you’ll need to mop up with multiple plates of rice. Needless to say, the only antidote to the spice is a healthy helping of rich coconut milk desserts, a full array available here to cool down your tongue and end your feast on a sweet note. (May 2018)
