As if you needed another reason to go to Katong! Do.Main Deli & Bakery fills its little corner of the East with the warm, irresistible fug of freshly baked croissants, French-style artisanal breads, and Viennoiseries, the perfect invitation to a lazy weekend brunch. In fact, the breakfast here is pretty popular with those in-the-know, who come to chow down on everything from flaky pastries to gooey Eggs Benedict, made with organic eggs and topped with your choice of ham or smoked salmon. They’ve recently released a new savoury menu that takes advantage of the kitchen’s formidable bread and pastries capabilities, while adding on a new, very popular selection of French bistro classics.
Lunch here features the hard-to-find Alsatian Tarte Flambée, a pizza-like pie featuring French toppings like Gruyère, mushrooms, and even chewy escargots on a finely-rolled, super-crisp bread dough base. Also on the menu are oh-so-French sandwich lunches. Think crispy baguettes filled with Jambon de Paris, smoked salmon, and cheese, or the king of all French sandwiches: the Croque Monsieur. For heartier fare, tuck into bistro-style fare like Beef Tartare and a beautiful Pork Belly Pie. There’s also a smoking-hot Ribeye Steak for the most carnivorous of appetites, and an unusual Shepherd’s Pie made with Duck Confit instead of minced lamb. Our money, however, is on the Rotisserie Chicken. This isn’t your average chook: it’s made with responsibly-sourced, corn-fed French chickens, each bird rubbed with some 45 spices before given a turn on the spit. The result is fork tender flesh, shatteringly crisp skin, and flavour for days. Come find your little slice of French heaven in the middle of Katong! (Mar 2018)
